LXML promotes safety through UXO Awareness Day at Sepon Mine

Lane Xang Minerals Limited Company (LXML), on October 19 held its UXO Awareness Day at the Sepon Mine in Vilabouly district, Savannakhet province,
to enhance understanding among employees and contractors about the dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and the importance of vigilance and safe behaviour when working in areas affected by historical conflict.
Organised by the Mine Technical Services Department, the event attracted broad participation from across the operation. Attendees explored an educational exhibition featuring real examples of UXO remnants discovered at Sepon, including cluster bombs (BLU3B and BLU26), mortars, grenades, and rockets etc.

These exhibits helped participants to recognise UXO types and understand the devastating effects of mishandling or disturbance.

The awareness programme provided participants with valuable knowledge on what UXO is, why it remains dangerous even after decades, and the common types found within Sepon Mine and its surrounding areas.
Participants also learned how UXO clearance detectors operate and how UXO disposal teams safely handle and remove explosives to ensure a secure working environment.
A UXO quiz game was also part of the event, encouraging active participation through interactive questions and discussions about UXO safety, with prizes such as caps, backpacks, T-shirts, and coffee cups awarded to winners.
The event forms part of LXML’s continuous efforts to support the Lao government’s National Strategy for UXO Clearance, which aims to make Laos free from UXO-related accidents by 2030.

Between 1964 and 1973, more than 2 million tonnes of ordnance was dropped on the country, making Laos the most heavily bombed nation per capita in history. To date, thousands of unexploded bombs remain buried in Lao soil, posing ongoing risks to people’s lives, livelihoods, and development.
Since the beginning of the Sepon Project in 1996, LXML has worked hand-in-hand with the Lao National Defence UXO Clearance Team to conduct surveys and safely remove unexploded bombs from its concession area. The company has invested more than US$56 million in UXO detection and clearance, ensuring the safety of its employees, contractors, and host communities.
“UXO Awareness Day is an important reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said an LXML representative from the Mine Technical Services Department.
“By learning how to identify and avoid UXO, our workforce not only protects themselves but also contributes to LXML’s mission of maintaining a safe and responsible mining operation that supports national development.”
