Luang Prabang city has added another milestone to its record of global recognition after being awarded the green destinations 2025-2027 silver level certification, becoming the first city in Laos and among the grouping of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to achieve this distinction.
The award was presented during the Sustainable Destinations Forum 2025 held on October 28-29 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The accolade was received by the Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Culture and Tourism Department, Dr Soudaphone Khomthavong, who led the Lao delegation attending the event.
The Green Destinations organisation, accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, is a leading global body that recognises destinations and tourism businesses that are committed to responsible and sustainable practices.
Its certification system consists of five levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and full Green Destination certification.

This recognition places Luang Prabang above its previous achievement in the Top 100 Green Destinations Stories, demonstrating continuous progress towards international standards. The city’s success reflects the joint efforts of local authorities, tourism operators, and communities to promote sustainable tourism based on environmental, socio-economic, and cultural pillars.
According to the Luang Prabang Provincial Culture and Tourism Department, achievement of the certification required the collection and verification of data across more than 100 sub-indicators.
Each element was reviewed by the Green Destinations audit team, which conducted site visits and assessments to ensure the accuracy of information and compliance with sustainability standards.
The award underscores Luang Prabang’s long-standing commitment to preserving its World Heritage values while promoting eco-friendly tourism that benefits local livelihoods.
The city has been internationally recognised for its clean environment, responsible waste management, and community-based tourism initiatives that prioritise both cultural preservation and local participation.
Looking ahead, the province aims to further enhance its sustainability standards. The 2026 roadmap includes improving specific criteria and indicators to progress towards the Gold Level and ultimately achieve full Green Destination certification, marking Luang Prabang as a global model of sustainable tourism.
This achievement is not only a source of pride for Luang Prabang, but also for the nation, and shows that Laos can stand among the world’s leading destinations while maintaining its unique cultural identity.
