DPM thanks partners for support during Laos’ battle with Covid
Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune on Monday hailed Laos’ success in overcoming Covid-19 and suppressing the last wave of the virus.
Speaking at a press conference, he thanked the government’s international partners for their support, but at the same time warned that the threat from Covid-19 is far from over.
He also praised the sacrifices made by members of the public in enduring lengthy periods of restrictions.
He acknowledged the timely and effective support of different sectors of government, international organisations, and development partners in the battle against Covid-19.
“The government anticipated the arrival of this terrible disease and did all the right things to stop it from spreading, undoubtedly saving many lives,” Prof. Dr Kikeo said.
The Ministry of Health and the National Taskforce on Covid-19 Prevention and Control were faced with unprecedented challenges but ultimately prevailed in a very difficult situation.
He attributed the triumph over the virus to diligence on the part of the highest levels of government to introduce and implement virus control measures and maintain close coordination.
Every state organisation, the government, and all sectors of society cooperated in complying with the measures responsibly.
“The whole of our society participated in the fight, with a high level of self-awareness and self-control, while also providing mutual support through various forms of giving based on solidarity and generosity,” Prof. Dr Kikeo said.
The responsible sectors, such as the National Covid Taskforce, the media, national security and defence forces, and especially healthcare professionals, are the heroes in this battle for their commitment to their jobs, he added.
He praised and thanked health officials and the National Covid Taskforce, but advised them to continue to carry out virus control measures.
He noted that all parties had complied with the measures put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19 as ordered by the Prime Minister’s Office.
“But Laos is still vulnerable in many ways and we cannot let down our guard,” Prof. Dr Kikeo said.
“We all need to be vigilant and resolutely continue to act on orders and guidelines. The government will follow up and assess events at every phase in order to effectively improve and adapt its planning, taking into account the needs of the public and the economy.”
“We must also continue to encourage everyone to be aware of the need for precautions, to live a new normal life with discipline, wear a face mask in crowded places, wash our hands regularly, and circulate information about the benefits of vaccination against Covid-19,” he added.
The government is continuing to roll out vaccinations, aiming for 80 percent coverage by the end of this year. But there has been low uptake in some provinces, especially among the younger age groups, and the vaccination rate in these areas is well below the 80 percent target.
