Customs duty on freight at Boten exceeds 290 billion kip

The amount of revenue collected on imported and exported goods passing through the Boten customs checkpoint at the Laos-China border exceeded 290 billion kip in the first six months of this year, which was 12.83 percent more than the target figure.
Freight weighing over 748 million tons passed from Laos into China at the Boten International Customs Checkpoint in Luang Namtha province in the first six months of this year, valued at more than US$224 million.

In the other direction, 325 million tons of freight crossed from China into Laos, valued at over US$567 million.
Head of the Boten International Customs Checkpoint, Mr Vilakone Kettavong, said that in the first six months of 2022, the total volume of exports was 748,097,712 tons, with a value of US$224,226,917. The volume of imports was 325,177,706 tons, valued at US$567,618,996.
The main items exported were agricultural produce, potassium salt, rubber, and iron ore.
Imported goods included items in transit through Laos between China and Thailand, mainly consisting of vegetables, fresh fruit, and frozen food.
When the Laos-China Railway first opened in December last year, trains carrying freight travelled between Laos and China three times a day, but this number has now increased to 10 a day.
In total, 26,389 containers have passed through Lao customs in Boten since January this year.
The target figure for revenue collected at the Boten customs checkpoint this year is 515.5 billion kip, which is an increase of 77.79 percent (225.5 billion kip) compared to the figure for 2021.
However, in the first six months of 2022, a total of 290.8 billion kip, equal to 56.42 percent of the target figure for the whole year, was collected, exceeding the January-June target by 12.83 percent, amounting to 33 billion kip.
The goal for the remaining six months of this year is to exceed the target figure of 515.5 billion kip set for the whole of 2022.
It is currently estimated that revenue collected at the Boten customs checkpoint will amount to 530 billion kip, equal to 102.81 percent of the target figure for 2022. This exceeds the target by 2.81 percent, amounting to 14.5 billion kip.
With regard to overall revenue collection from rail freight services, the target figure for the first six months of 2022 was 97.75 billion kip, of which 34.58 billion kip has now been accrued.
The target figure for the whole of 2022 is 195.5 billion kip, of which 40.5 billion kip has been collected from the start of the year to July 31, equal 20.72 percent.
Mr Vilakone said revenue collection operations had been successful thanks to helpful guidance from the Customs Department and customs officials in Luang Namtha province, who have been closely involved in the regular implementation of specialised operations.
The Boten International Customs Checkpoint uses modern systems such as ASYCUDA, SMART Tax, Scanner, EasyPASS, and the Lao National Single Window system.
All customs officials have been industrious in their duties and carried out their work responsibly, Mr Vilakone said.
