Cumulative power generation of Nam Ou River cascade hydropower stations exceeds 1000GWh in 2022

The annual cumulative power generation of Nam Ou River cascade hydropower stations, invested and developed by PowerChina, exceeded 1000GWh as of May 1, 2022.

Power generation has reached a new high in the same period since the power stations of the Nam Ou HPP have been put into operation, which contributes to International Labour Day and the 61st anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Laos with such excellent performance.

On October 1, 2021, along with the completion and operation of the Nam Ou1,3,4&7 hydropower stations of the Nam Ou HPP, a total of 7 hydropower stations in the Nam Ou River basin have been put into  generation so far. As the leading reservoir in the Nam Ou River basin, the Nam Ou7 Hydropower
Station Reservoir, with an adjustable storage capacity of 1313MCM, can continuously provide water for 7 power stations, hence energy is increased significantly in the dry season, with strong peak load regulation capacity.
Through the cascade reservoirs joint dispatchment operation of Nam Ou River HPP, the power quality fundamentally changed, which effectively eases the shortage of electricity in the dry season.

The Nam Ou River HPP plays an important role in terms of the safe and stable operation of the power grid in central and northern Laos. At the same time, it helps power export to earn foreign currency, providing stable and high-quality power supply for safe operation of the China-Laos railway. It also provides a fundamental guarantee for industrial and residential power consumption in central and northern Laos, as

well as providing strong support for building the “Southeast Asia battery” of Laos.
The Nam Ou River HPP is the first project developed by PowerChina overseas with overall planning of the whole river basin and by way of BOT. It is developed in two phases according to “one reservoir and seven cascades” with total installed capacity of 1272MW, with an average annual power generation capacity of 5000GWh.
