28 new Covid cases, bringing total to 1,233

The National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control on Saturday announced 28 more cases of Covid-19, bringing the total to date to 1,233.

The new cases were confirmed while the country remains in lockdown after the government extended the stay-at-home order until May 20.

The positive test results were obtained from samples that were tested for the virus on May 7.

The highest number of new infections was reported in Bokeo with 12 new cases, followed by Vientiane with eight, three in Champassak province, three in Savannakhet, one in Oudomxay, and one in Vientiane province.

More than 3,129 people have been admitted to 50 quarantine centres across the country and samples taken from them have been sent for Covid-19 tests.

While it is encouraging that the infection rate continues to decline, it is still essential to comply with government guidelines to keep the virus in check.

In order to contain the spread of the virus, the government and local authorities have imposed travel restrictions and banned people from leaving their homes unless necessary.

Health officials urge anyone who believes they have come into contact with an infected person to self-isolate for 14 days.

The outbreak has spread to 15 provinces, with only Attapeu, Xaysomboun and Huaphan remaining virus-free.

At present, 1,083 people are in hospitals around the country after testing positive for Covid-19 but no deaths from the virus have been reported.

Meanwhile, standards at quarantine centres will be improved along with enhanced testing among suspect and at-risk groups.
