5 more infections raise Covid total to 1,883

The National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control on Wednesday said senior officials in villages and districts must regulate people’s movements and self-isolation to ensure the virus is contained.
The taskforce also stressed the importance of tracing the contacts of people with the virus, educating local communities about the prevention of Covid-19, and reporting suspected cases to health authorities.

Although the virus outbreak appears to be waning in some provinces, a widespread community outbreak is continuing in Vientiane and efforts must be stepped up to control the virus, the taskforce said.
Leading a press briefing on behalf of the taskforce on Wednesday, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control of the Ministry of Health, Dr Sisavath Soutthanalaxay, gave an update on the latest developments.
Five more people have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of Covid cases in Laos since March last year to 1,883.
The positive test results were obtained after 1,767 samples were tested on May 25.
In Vientiane, a 33-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man in Hongkaykeo village, Chanthabouly district, tested positive, as well as a 17-year-old girl in Amone village, Xaythany district.
In Savannakhet province, two people tested positive after returning to Laos from another country.
Meanwhile, 1,261 people have recovered from the virus and been discharged from hospitals.
Two deaths from the virus have been reported.
Globally, the United States has recorded the highest number of cases, followed by India and Brazil.
The number of Covid-19 cases worldwide rose to 168,486,828 on May 26.
A total of 3,498,525 deaths were reported and 149,999,744 people have recovered from the illness.
In the Asean bloc, Myanmar has recorded the highest number of cases, with 34 more announced on May 26.
This brings the total number of Covid cases to 143,296 in Myanmar, where 3,216 people have died and 132,229 people have recovered.
Thailand announced 3,226 new infections on May 26, bringing the total number of cases to 135,439. Some 832 people have died and 89,194 people have recovered.
