Borikhamxay police weed out marijuana crop

Borikhamxay provincial police last week cut down 2.3 hectares of marijuana plants found growing in Oudomxay village, Viengthong district.
Police said they found plants growing in eight different places in three locations around Oudomxay village and uprooted 8,593kg of the illicit crop.
The owner of the land is still unknown, but the plants were cleared and subsequently burned.

The discovery and destruction of the crop followed on from a previous operation two weeks ago when police cleared marijuana plants from another 9.9 hectares in the same village.
During an inspection of the area, authorities found 17 plots where marijuana was growing in three locations around the village on an area of 9.9 hectares, with the weight of the crop estimated at 54,195kg.
One person was detained on suspicion of responsibility for the cultivation of marijuana, while the owners of the 16 other plots of land have yet to be identified.
Local authorities are trying to put a stop to the cultivation of marijuana, which is believed to be widely trafficked in Viengthong district. The government is continuing to wage war on drugs and will follow the Party’s policy to ensure that Laos continues to be stable, peaceful and orderly.
The Ministry of Public Security recently advised officials at all levels to take tougher action to tackle the drug problem while complying with the correct legal procedures.
The ministry instructed the Party Committee and Commanding Committee at each level to fulfil the recently-introduced National Agenda on drug control.
However, solutions to the drug problem must ensure the systematic and continuous implementation of legal procedures and must follow the letter of the law in ways that are transparent, strict, professional and timely, the ministry advised.
