Healthcare staff contract Covid despite being fully vaccinated

A total of 126 people have contracted Covid-19 after being fully vaccinated, but no one is known to have died due to the side effects of the vaccine, according to the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.
The taskforce announced on Wednesday that 12 healthcare workers who had been fully vaccinated had tested positive for Covid-19 in Champassak province on August 30, after experiencing mild symptoms of the virus.
One had been treating a Covid patient, while the source of infection among the others is unclear, the taskforce reported.
Of the 126 health workers who have contracted the virus, 50 became infected more than two months after having their second dose of a vaccine, while the others became infected less than two weeks after their second vaccination.
Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control under the Ministry of Health, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh, told Vientiane Times “It is clear that people can still contract the virus after being fully vaccinated, but symptoms will be mild.”
It has also been reported that some health workers in Savannakhet and Khammuan provinces picked up the virus after being fully vaccinated, he said.
In the United States, nearly all reported Covid deaths occurred among people who had not been vaccinated, Associated Press reported on June 30.
Meanwhile CNBC reported on August 24 that unvaccinated people are about 29 times more likely to be hospitalised with Covid than those who are fully vaccinated. In addition, unvaccinated people are nearly five times more likely to be infected with Covid than vaccinated people.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), vaccination protects an individual from getting seriously ill and dying from Covid-19.
In Malaysia, 40 healthcare workers became infected after being vaccinated against Covid-19 but experienced only mild symptoms, the WHO reported in April 2021.
