Lao VP contributes to forum on women’s role in modern world
Female leaders from Laos and over 100 states discussed the role of women in the modern world and worked out new approaches to solving global problems at the Third Eurasian Women’s Forum.
The Forum was held in St. Petersburg, Russia on October 13-15.
The topic of the Forum “Women: A Global Mission in a New Reality”. Boosting international cooperation to enhance the role of women in order to meet the goals of sustainable development, forming women’s agenda and new approaches to solving global problems in the new reality.

The Lao delegation took part in the Forum via videoconference and was led by Vice President of the Lao PDR Mrs Pany Yathotou.
In her speech, Vice President Pany spoke about “social change 2030 and the mission of women to achieve inclusive sustainable development”, as the Lao government has given importance to inclusive sustainable development and take the policy as a goal to lift the country out of Least Developed Country status.
Mrs Pany talked about achievements in gender equality promotion by the government.
The government has taken steps to guide the successful implementation of women’s empowerment, intelligence, knowledge and ability to contribute to socio-economic development in many areas of work, which is reflected in the number of women in government and the legislature, she said.
In 2021, Laos was ranked 37th in the world and 2nd in Asean on the role of women in political platforms.
Mrs Pany said that in terms of international integration, women still face challenges that must be addressed to solve issues such as domestic violence, health, access to information, access to funding, promotion of micro, small and medium enterprises, human trafficking, and the impacts of unexploded ordnance.
The Vice President thanked partner countries and international organisations for their support to Laos, especially the provision of supplies and vaccines to combat the spread of Covid-19.
The Forum is viewed as a good opportunity for women in the region to discuss ways to promote and strengthen cooperation for development and work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
Participants discussed topics including the role of women in ensuring global security, transitioning to new models of economic growth, social progress, overcoming the negative consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, achieving balance in the context of universal digitalisation, and solving global environmental and climate problems.
The face-to-face Forum in St. Petersburg was held in strict accordance with safety measures aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19, which were drawn up by the organising committee in line with WHO requirements.
