Luang Namtha bans travel to and from Bokeo

The move comes after it was learnt that people from Bokeo provincial who were infected with the virus travelled through Luang Namtha and came into contact with numerous people in the province.
Now no one from Bokeo will be allowed to enter Luang Namtha until the travel ban is revoked.
Bokeo provincial authorities have ordered a lockdown in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Tonpheung district until August 30 after locally-transmitted cases were identified in the area.

Luang Namtha provincial authorities are now ramping up Covid testing for people who have come into contact with individuals known to be infected, and will quarantine them, the Bokeo Newspaper reported on August 25.
In Luang Prabang, provincial authorities have placed Khomkhuang village in the provincial capital under lockdown until September 8 and classified it as a red zone, after locally-transmitted cases were identified in the area.
Entry to and exit from Khomkhuang village is banned and checkpoints have been set up to prevent people travelling unnecessarily. Those who have to leave or enter the village for essential reasons must get permission from the local Covid-19 taskforce, Luang Prabang News reported on August 25.
Shops and restaurants in the village have been closed. If no new cases of the virus are reported within the next 14 days, authorities will declassify the village as a red zone.
Meanwhile, Luang Prabang authorities have told ministries and provincial officials that meetings will not be allowed in the province for the foreseeable future because of the high risk of a Covid outbreak, Lao Youth reported on August 26.
On Thursday the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control announced 195 new cases of Covid-19 countrywide, bringing the total to 14,104.
Luang Prabang recorded 2 new imported cases and 3 locally-transmitted cases, while Tonpheung district in Bokeo province recorded 15 locally-transmitted cases.
To slow the virus outbreak, the government is rolling out the vaccination programme as quickly as possible in the hope of immunising 50 percent of the adult population by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, people who have been vaccinated are encouraged to continue to comply with the virus prevention measures laid down by the National Covid-19 Taskforce, especially with regard to social distancing.
