Ministry cancels end-of-year school exams

Education authorities have cancelled end-of-year exams and instead will allow students who have scored an average of 5 or more in all subjects to automatically progress to a higher grade next school year.
This does not apply to students in Grade 5 of primary school and Grades 4 and 7 of secondary schools who will sit their final year exams as usual.
Announcing the change to normal exam procedure, Deputy Director General of the General Education Department, Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr Banchong Ladthavarn, said students who scored less than 5 will sit exams at a later date.

Under the new ruling, primary school students in Grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 and secondary school students in Grades 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 who scored an average of 5 or more in all subjects (as assessed five months ago) will automatically enter a higher grade next academic year.
“The recommendation was made by the General Education Department and submitted to the ministry,” Mr Banchong said.
The department has instructed education and sports departments in Vientiane and the provinces to comply with the recommendation, while provincial authorities are informing district education and sports offices and schools about the change.
Mr Banchong said organising committees are assessing the number of exam rooms and centres needed and the number of final year students sitting exams in each province. The ministry has advised that no more than 15 students should be seated in one exam room because of Covid rules on physical distancing.
Final year students have resumed classes to prepare for their exams after education authorities approved the reopening of schools in areas with no new Covid infections.
Grade 5 examinations in primary schools will take place from June 28 to July 2. Grade 4 examinations in secondary schools will take place from July 21-23, and Grade 7 examinations will be held from July 28-30.
“The ministry will announce any changes to the timetable if the virus outbreak continues,” Mr Banchong said.
In an update of its regulations, the ministry has approved outdoor sports activities and exercising in public parks and other places, as well as the resumption of badminton, golf and football. The owners of sports facilities must strictly comply with Covid-19 prevention rules, especially with regard to social distancing.
The ministry has advised officials at education and sports departments in Vientiane and the provinces to coordinate with provincial taskforces for Covid-19 prevention and control to decide which schools and sports facilities can reopen.
The operators of sports facilities that are allowed to reopen will be required to keep the premises clean to reduce the risk of infection.
