NUOL announces PhD in Lao language and culture
A new PhD programme in Lao language and culture will be taught at the Faculty of Letters at the National University of Laos (NUOL).
The degree programme comprises areas of study covering theory and principles in the preservation, development and use of Lao language, literature and folklore. Following completion of the programme, graduates will be qualified to take leadership positions in several fields at the faculty.
An opening ceremony for the PhD programme for the academic year 2021-2022 took place online on Friday. The programme will normally last four years and will be limited to seven people a year.
An advisor to the programme’s management committee, Prof. Dr Bualy Paphaphanh, said the degree programme on Lao language and culture is a combination of disciplines in the fields of language, literature and folklore, which have previously been studied in bachelor and master’s programmes and have now been combined into a curriculum titled Language and Culture. The Faculty of Letters began offering a master’s programme in Lao language and culture in 2003.
The new PhD programme on Lao language and culture will include the topics Lao Politics and Administration, Theory and Research Methodology for Humanities, Modern Theory of Linguistics, Modern Theory of Literature, Modern Theory of Culture, and Modern Theory of Folklore. Prof. Dr Bualy said the lecturers in each subject hold a doctorate or master’s degree in a related field and have experience and academic achievements relating to the course content.
To meet international and Asean standards, university authorities will invite lecturers from Laos and other countries to provide a diverse array of knowledge sources for students. Seven people have already been selected for the PhD programme this academic year. Applicants must pass oral and written Lao language, English and French proficiency tests before being accepted into the programme.
Applicants must have a master’s degree in Lao language and culture or a related subject as well as two years of experience.
In the final year of the programme, students must present the articles they have written, which will be submitted for publication in international magazines.
Other faculties at the National University of Laos are also offering PhD programmes. The Faculty of Economics and Business Management began a PhD programme in economics three years ago and this year is offering a PhD programme in management.
A PhD programme on education management also began at the Faculty of Education this year, running for three to five years
Following completion of this programme, graduates are qualified to take leadership positions in public institutions, preschools and kindergartens, as adult education providers, with service companies, and as special education providers.
