Tham Than Phou Nam caves reopen to visitors

The well-known Tham Than Phou Nam caves in Viengxay district, Huaphan province, have reopened to visitors after they were closed to the public because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
The five caves have huge historical significance and are named after the revolutionary leaders who inhabited them during the war and the fight for national liberation.
Visitors can learn lot about this revolutionary stronghold by studying the pictures and captions inside the caves, which explain the activities of revolutionary leaders and the way in which the caves were used for meetings and day-to-day living.

 

The caves are named after the revolutionary leaders who were state leaders after the Lao People’s Democratic Republic was proclaimed. The leaders were President Kaysone Phomvihane, President Souphanouvong, President Nouhak Phoumsavanh, President Khamtay Siphandone.
Another cave is named after Mr Phoumy Vongvichit, according to https://discoverlaos.today.
The caves are open daily from 8am-12 and from 1.30-4.30pm. The entry fee is 10,000 kip for Lao nationals and 20,000 kip for foreigners, according to the Huaphan provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department.
Provincial authorities have also reopened other places that were closed because of the Covid-19 outbreak, including Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park, which is one of the largest protected areas in Laos.
Within the park, visitors can take boat trips on the Nam Nern river to spot wildlife during a night safari and go on treks through forested areas, all of which help to support wildlife conservation as well as local communities.
Huaphan province is located in the far north of Laos, about 600km from Vientiane and is renowned for its stunning waterfalls, including Saleuy, Tadloun and Phavang, as well as Tham Hang cave and the Hiem and Nam Meuang hot springs.
The province is also home to Pha Thee mountain and has a renowned city pillar in the provincial capital.
Viengxay district recently received an Asean Clean Tourism Standard award following an assessment of compliance with Asean tourism standards.
