Two more Covid deaths reported
The National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control on Monday announced that two more people had died from the virus in Savannakhet province, raising the total number of deaths to 14.
One of those who died was a 33-year-old inmate of Savannakhet prison. He began to exhibit symptoms of Covid with the severity of his illness escalating on August 25, followed by his death on August 29. The other victim was a 74-year-old woman in Kaysone Phomvihane city, who suffered from hypertension. She was admitted to hospital on August 27 and died on August 29.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh, said the total number of Covid cases recorded now stood at 14,816 after 155 new cases were confirmed.
Of these, 15 cases were locally-transmitted, with one recorded in Vientiane province, one in Saravan, three in Bokeo, one in Luang Namtha, and nine in Savannakhet.
In Vientiane province, another infected person from Bokeo province is now in quarantine in Kasy district.
In Savannakhet, a medical worker contracted the virus, while the other cases were identified in various areas of Kaysone Phomvihane city.
The case in Saravan involved a quarantine centre employee. Meanwhile, 140 imported cases were confirmed, with five recorded in Vientiane, 19 in Savannakhet province, 53 in Champassak province, 48 in Saravan, 14 in Khammuan province, and one in Luang Prabang province.
There are currently 5,040 active cases of Covid-19.
Health officials urge everyone who tests positive for Covid-19 and people in at-risk groups to provide full and accurate information so that their contacts can be traced.
Laos reported the first death from the virus in the nation on May 2021, according to reported by the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.
