National Party Congress officially opens
The 12th Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party officially opened this morning in Vientiane, the political, economic and social centre of the country.
The opening ceremony began at 8am, starting with a show of respect for the national flag, and the national anthem being played by the army’s drum corps, followed by the presentation of bouquets by pioneers to the congress chairpersons.

The Lao PDR enjoys political stability, a growing economy, and improved living standards under the strong leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.
The congress is an important political event for Laos, when participants will discuss issues of national importance and set the direction of the Party's leadership over the next five years.
Those attending the meeting include the Secretary General of the Party Central Committee, Thongloun Sisoulith, and 834 Party delegates, including 123 women, who represent 421,865 Party members around the country.
Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith officially opened the congress. In his speech, he highlighted the Party’s strong leadership in all areas of work and the improved living conditions of all ethnic people across the country.
He then presented a report on the 3rd political project on enabling the political regime to advance socialism and outlined the content of the draft political report.
The meeting will review and approve four important documents: 1) draft of the Party’s political project; 2) draft of a political report by the 11th Party Central Committee; 3) draft of the National Socio-Economic Development Plan for the 10th five-year period; and 4) a revised draft of Party principles.
In addition, the meeting will elect the members of the 12th Party Central Committee.
The meeting will close on January 8.
