Party leaders pay tribute to revolutionary heroes
All Lao people across the country warmly welcome the 12th National Party Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
As the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) prepares to open its 12th National Party Congress on January 6, Party leaders on Monday morning paid solemn tribute to the nation’s revolutionary heroes and founding leaders, reaffirming the Party’s enduring mission and vision for national development.
On the morning of January 5, Party leaders, led by the Secretary General of the LPRP Central Committee, Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith, laid wreaths at the Unknown Soldiers’ Monument and placed baskets of flowers at the Kaysone Phomvihane Museum in Vientiane.
The meaningful ceremony was held to herald the 12th National Party Congress of the LPRP, which takes place from January 6-8.
The wreath-laying ceremony symbolised the deep respect and gratitude felt for the revolutionary fighters who sacrificed their lives and shed blood for the revolutionary cause. Their heroic spirit and indomitable will, under the leadership of the LPRP, laid the foundation for national independence and the establishment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
At the Kaysone Phomvihane Museum, Party leaders paid tribute to President Kaysone Phomvihane, the great patriot and beloved leader of the Lao revolution. The placing of flower baskets honoured his lifelong dedication to national independence and freedom, as well as his role in leading the country in the two major tasks of defending and developing the nation.
His legacy continues through the successful implementation of comprehensive renovation guided by Party principles, which has brought stability and progress to the country.
These activities took place on the eve of the three-day 12th National Party Congress of the LPRP, which opens on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Politburo member and Head of the Congress Secretariat, Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune described the congress as a significant political and historical milestone for both the Party and the nation.
A total of 834 delegates, including 123 women, will attend the congress, representing 421,865 Party members nationwide. The delegates come from ministries, equivalent organisations and provinces, reflecting the diversity of Lao society in terms of ethnicity, gender, age and professional background. In addition, 388 invited guests will take part in the event.
Held once every five years, the National Party Congress reviews achievements since the previous congress and sets the country’s development direction for the next five-year period.
This yeaar’s congress takes the theme “Elevate the Party’s strong leadership role, actively build an independent and self-reliant economy, continue to nurture the people’s democratic regime, and advance steadfastly towards socialism”.
Delegates will consider and adopt the drafts of four key documents, including the political report of the 11th Party Central Committee and the 10th five-year National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2026-2030. These documents will shape the Party’s political strategy and the State’s socio-economic direction, in keeping with Laos’ particular circumstances.
The congress will also elect the new 12th Party Central Committee, the Party’s highest leading body that will shape policies in the new term. The newly elected committee will then choose the Party Secretary General and members of the Politburo, and elect members of other key Party bodies.
Preparations for the congress began in 2023 and involved broad consultations at both the central and local levels, including with friendly countries, ensuring the documents reflect collective wisdom and national aspirations.
The 12th National Party Congress takes place in a year of deep historical significance.
Throughout the past year, the entire Party, State, armed forces and Lao people of all ethnic groups united in pride to celebrate three milestones: the 70th anniversary of the founding of the LPRP, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Lao PDR, and the 105th anniversary of the birth of President Kaysone Phomvihane.
These anniversaries were celebrated nationwide in a dignified and joyful atmosphere, highlighting Laos’ strong revolutionary traditions and national unity.
In March, a grand rally marking the Party’s 70th anniversary was held in Vientiane, attended by Party leaders, officials, members of the armed forces, students and members of mass organisations from across the country.
The Party’s glorious journey of struggle, growth and continuous development since its founding on March 22, 1955, in Huaphan province under the leadership of President Kaysone Phomvihane, is a matter of pride for all Lao citizens.
The solemn tributes paid on the morning of January 5 serve as a reminder that the nation’s future development remains firmly rooted in the revolutionary spirit, unity, and vision that have guided the country for generations.
