Govt reviews 2025 performance, sets priorities for 2026
The government is assessing its performance in 2025 and defining priority tasks and plans for 2026 at a two-day meeting in Vientiane.
The meeting, convened on Monday and Tuesday, involves discussions on economic self-reliance, infrastructure development, and other national priorities.
Chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and taking place at the National Convention Centre, attendees include Deputy Prime Ministers, government members, the Mayor of Vientiane, provincial governors, and representatives from Party and state organisations, ministry-equivalent bodies, the Lao Front for National Development, the National Assembly, the judiciary, mass organisations, the State Inspection Authority and the State Audit Organisation.
The meeting is reviewing government operations over the past year, high-lighting key achievements and challenges in 2025, and discussing the work plan for 2026 and the government’s medium-term five-year trajectory.
Prime Minister Sonexay noted that this was the final open government meeting involving the Mayor of Vientiane, provincial governors and representatives of public organisations under the current government’s term of office.
He called on participants to provide concise and constructive feedback, propose clear and practical solutions, and ensure that the outcomes of the meeting were translated into concrete and effective actions.
One of the main topics of discussion is the implementation of Resolution No. 4 adopted by the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee in April 2024 on building an independent and self-reliant economy.
Participants are also examining a draft resolution on revising the division of responsibilities to strengthen coordination and improve efficiency in the implementation of the resolution.
The agenda further includes consideration of a draft decree defining tasks and responsibilities around implementation of the 2026 National Socio-Economic Development Plan, the State Budget Plan and Monetary Plan, as well as measures to address problems identified during state inspections and audits.
Several national infrastructure projects are also under review, including the design, construction, financing and operation of Phase 1 of the Laos-Vietnam Railway.
This is a 147-kilometre railway linking Thakhaek district in Khammuan province and the Mu Gia border crossing, under a Build-Operate-Transfer mod-el. The outcomes of negotiations on the concession agreement are also being assessed.
Participants are also discussing the 2026 priority plan on the construction and upgrade of roads, including expressways, and proposed mechanisms to ensure practical and effective implementation.
In addition, the government is considering an action plan on the modernisation of national revenue collection.
The meeting is expected to play an important role in shaping government policy direction and implementation priorities in the coming year.
