Education ministry signs US$1.35m package to raise standards at secondary schools

The Ministry of Education and Sports, in partnership with the Education Development Fund (EDF-Lao), has entered into an agreement that will see US$1.3 million spent on improvements to education in four southern provinces.
The agreement was signed last month and will be carried out under Phase 4 of the programme.
The project targets the provinces of Khammuan, Savannakhet, Xekong and Salavan, aiming to strengthen education quality and expand learning opportunities in these areas. The funds will be used to support key education initiatives, particularly at the secondary school level.
The programme aims to improve access to education and enhance teaching quality for students in the 10-18 age group, particularly in rural and disadvantaged communities.
The project also provides technical support to the ministry and aligns with the national Education and Sports Sector Development Plan.
An education official said the initiative is expected to strengthen education outcomes, support rural development, and help reduce poverty in the target provinces.
The Ministry of Education and Sports is committed to the development of science and technology as the key to raising the standard of education and modernising education programmes at all levels so they are relevant to today’s development needs.
The ministry will continue to invest in building modern educational infrastructure and facilities across the country.
It will not only expand access to education, but also aim to improve its quality and relevance.
This includes upgrading classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and digital learning facilities to ensure they meet modern standards and support effective teaching and learning.
Special attention will be paid to ensuring equitable access to schools and training centres in both urban and rural areas.
