Mr Khamphanh Pheuyavong talks to media personnel about publicity surrounding the elections.

Media campaign ramps up ahead of February elections

Media coverage of the upcoming elections has expanded nationwide, with authorities rolling out a coordinated campaign to inform voters of their rights and responsibilities ahead of polling day on February 22.
All major media outlets are now reporting regularly on the elections, supported by organised planning and budget allocations to ensure consistent coverage through radio, television, print and online platforms.
Speaking to media personnel on Tuesday, Politburo member and Head of the Propaganda and Training Committee of the Party Central Committee, Mr Khamphanh Pheuyavong, outlined the responsibilities of the various government bodies covering the election.
Publicity and organisation of the elections and voting is being undertaken by the Propaganda Unit, the Process Mobilisation Unit, and the Coordination Secretariat.
The Propaganda Unit is the main player in providing official information about the elections to members of the public. Its duties include coordinating with subcommittees to report on the activities of the National Election Committee at the central and provincial levels, and explaining key election documents and policies.
A major focus is public education based on three core question-and-answer documents. These explain voters’ rights, the role of the National Assembly and Provincial People’s Councils, and the procedures involved in electing members of the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Councils.
This unit is also responsible for publicising the Politburo Resolution issued on September 12, 2025, which seeks to strengthen the Party’s supervision of the election process, as well as a Presidential Decree announcing the number and list of candidates.
The media is now spotlighting the candidates in each electoral district, while special coverage is planned for Election Day, including reports on voting, ballot counting, and the announcement of results after they are approved by the National Election Committee.
After the results are made official, the media will publish a list of elected members and report on preparations for the inaugural sessions of the new National Assembly and Provincial People’s Councils.
Mr Khamphanh said campaigning during this period also relies strongly on oral communication and training sessions aimed at election stakeholders, alongside regular reporting in newspapers and on radio and national television.
Election messaging stresses the link between voting and patriotism, and encourages citizens to view participation as part of their responsibility in developing and modernising Laos.
Articles and broadcasts concerning the meaning and importance of the elections are currently being shared widely at both the national and provincial levels to ensure that all voters receive clear and timely information and are inspired to vote.
