Light and colour wow crowds at Vat Phou Festival
The ancient Vat Phou temple complex in Champasak province was filled with colour, light and a sense of pride during the annual Vat Phou Festival, which took place from January 31 to February 2, marking the 25th anniversary of the majestic ruins’ inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The festival was attended by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Vice President Mrs Pany Yathotou, and other government leaders, alongside monks, local residents and large numbers of Lao and foreign visitors, highlighting the importance of the event.
The official opening ceremony was a major highlight, featuring an impressive light show in which 590 drones formed images symbolising the origins of Champasak and the spiritual foundations of the Vat Phou Champasak temple.
The event was further enhanced by a spectacular display of 250 fireworks, illuminating the night sky and creating a festive atmosphere.
Stage performances depicting the history and construction of the Vat Phou temple also took place, giving audiences deeper insight into the ancient site’s historical, religious and architectural importance, which dates back more than 1,000 years.
A wide range of activities contributed to the vibrant atmosphere throughout the three-day event, including traditional sports competitions, and almsgiving to monks at the temple complex.
There was also a lively market fair showcasing One District, One Product items, where locally made handicrafts, agricultural products and traditional goods from Champasak province and neighbouring areas were available for purchase.
The Vat Phou Festival is one of the most important and popular events on the Lao calendar, reflecting the country’s rich spiritual heritage while also drawing more visitors to southern Laos.
With its unique blend of heritage, cultural traditions and dramatic setting, the Vat Phou Festival once again highlighted Champasak’s strong appeal as one of southern Laos’ leading tourism destinations.
In addition to the famed temple ruins, Champasak province is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty, including the Khonphapheng, Tad Fan and Tad Yeuang waterfalls. Tad Yeuang waterfall has received an ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award, underscoring the province’s growing reputation as a destination for high-quality tourism.
