AHF Laos: Condoms remain vital in fight against HIV surge
As International Condom Day on February 13 approaches, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Laos is calling for a renewed focus on the world’s most effective tool for sexual health. AHF continues to stress that condoms are a primary tool in the effort to eradicate HIV, offering a convenient, affordable, and accessible option for all.
A critical moment for prevention
The global rise in STI rates, particularly syphilis, is directly linked to diminishing funding and a lack of prioritisation for condom-based prevention. Without an immediate course correction, HIV rates may follow this upward trend. Sustaining the HIV response does not require new scientific breakthroughs; rather, it demands political will, sustained investment, and a commitment to ensuring condoms are free or affordable for those who need them most.
“Across Asia, HIV remains a persistent challenge,” said AHF Asia Bureau Chief, Dr Chhim Sarath. “Condoms are simple and effective, but they only work when people can get them and feel safe using them. This day is a reminder that we need education and real access to what we know already works.”

The local context
In Laos, new HIV infection rates remain high, with approximately 2,000 cases detected annually in 2023 and 2024. Between January and September 2025, roughly 1,600 individuals tested positive, with 60 percent of these cases involving young people aged 20-34.
The latest Integrated Biological and Behavioral Survey (IBBS) and community discussions reveal gaps in protection. While most female sex workers use condoms with clients, approximately 20-25 percent report only occasional use with regular partners. Additionally, those in remote areas still report difficulties in accessing supplies.
Direct action and support
To address these challenges, AHF Laos ensures health safety by distributing approximately one million free condoms annually. Country Programme Manager for AHF Laos, Dr Soulivanh Phengxay, noted that the foundation also supports Provincial Committees for the Control of AIDS in conducting monthly outreach and testing to disseminate vital HIV prevention knowledge.
“Just Use It!”campaign
Launched by AHF in 2009, International Condom Day serves as a reminder that condoms are a convenient, sexy, and essential component of modern healthcare. By keeping condoms at the centre of public health, the foundation aims to eradicate HIV, prevent STIs, and avoid unplanned pregnancies.
