Tourism surges in Champasak amid plans to enhance visitor appeal
Champasak province recorded a strong rebound in tourism in 2025, welcoming a total of 728,064 visitors and generating more than US$94 million in revenue, according to provincial authorities.
The figure includes 286,941 Lao visitors, 133,809 people making border crossings, and 307,314 foreign visitors, representing an increase of 11.24 percent compared to 2024.
The encouraging performance comes as the province prepares to roll out its 10th socio-economic development plan for 2026-2030, which places a strong emphasis on green and sustainable development while building an independent and self-sufficient economy.
Under the plan, Champasak will prioritise tourism as a key driver of growth by carrying out developments in the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) archipelago, the Vat Phou world heritage site, agriculture- and nature-based tourism on the Bolaven Plateau, and in Pakse city.
Improvements to infrastructure and services are also planned to make travel easier for visitors.
The overall aim is to diversify tourism products and improve service standards, particularly at restaurants and hotels and guesthouses.
New and upgraded attractions will include a million-year-old volcano on the Bolaven Plateau, scenic dining viewpoints, Mekong River boat services, and activities involving waterfalls and the Mekong River in Pakse and Khong districts.
Champasak is one of southern Laos’ most popular destinations, well known for its varied landscapes and natural beauty, cultural attractions and river-based tourism. The province’s renewed focus on sustainable tourism development is expected to further strengthen its appeal to both Lao and foreign travellers.
