Phu Bia Mining satisfies local residents over environmental concerns
Communities living near Phu Bia Mining’s operations in Anouvong district, Xaysomboun province, continue to live in a safe and healthy environment, the company stated in response to previously-expressed environmental concerns.
Company employee Mr Han Chanthavong told visiting reporters that several years ago, residents of Nammo village raised questions after noticing water seeping from the area surrounding the wastewater storage facility.
At the time, there was concern that the water could have originated from the processing plant’s wastewater system.
“The issue was discussed with local residents three to four years ago and since then no such incident has reoccurred,” Mr Han said.
Company representatives say the water that was observed was not wastewater, but rather part of the engineered drainage system built into the dam embankment.
Because the embankment is constructed from soil, a drainage mechanism is required to safely release naturally accumulated groundwater and prevent erosion or structural damage.
The company invited villagers to inspect the site and observe the system firsthand. Following the explanations, people gained a clearer understanding of the situation.
Regarding the Phu Kham wastewater storage area, officials said that during the rainy season from May to November, excess rainwater may need to be discharged in particularly wet years.
Before any release, the company must formally notify the relevant government authorities. The water is pumped in controlled volumes and must meet environmental quality standards before entering natural waterways.
Company representatives said the discharged water complies with environmental regulations and contains no harmful contaminants. Currently, the facility holds 5-6 million cubic metres of water, and controlled release is necessary only when levels exceed safety limits.
Beyond technical safeguards, the company continues to engage closely with surrounding communities. Environmental protection, safety, and community development remain key priorities.
Recognising that policies and procedures are not always immediately understood, the company has strengthened communication efforts to ensure transparency, build trust, and support local livelihoods.
Today, people living around the mining site report stable living conditions, reflecting improved understanding and ongoing cooperation between the company and the local community.
