Your vote, your voice: February 22 set to be a momentous Election Day

In villages along the Mekong River, in busy towns, and in remote mountainous districts, preparations are underway for an important national event. The date is drawing closer, and on February 22, Lao citizens across the country will share in a democratic process that will shape the future of the nation.
On that day, voters will go to the polls to elect representatives to the 10th National Assembly and the 5th Provincial People’s Councils. It is an event that reminds every citizen that the country’s progress and development are not only guided by national leaders, but also supported by the people through participation and responsibility.

The elections are more than a routine event on the calendar. It is a time for Lao people of all ethnic groups and backgrounds to come together with one shared purpose: to select capable representatives who will serve the nation, safeguard the interests of the people, and contribute to sustainable development.
Speaking to the Phouthen Pasaxon News, Vice President of the National Assembly, Mrs Sounthone Xayachak, said “This year’s election carries special importance because it involves leadership at the highest levels. For the first time, members of the Politburo and the Party Central Committee are among the candidates. Their participation highlights the significance of the election and demonstrates the close connection between the Party leadership and the people.”
At the national level, voters will elect members of the 10th National Assembly, which plays a central role in shaping the country’s future. National Assembly members debate and approve new laws and policies, as well as reviewing national socio-economic development plans.
Its members raise concerns submitted to them by local communities, help resolve pressing issues, and ensure that the decisions made reflect people’s real needs.
This is why choosing the right candidates matters.
According to official figures, 243 candidates are contesting 175 seats in the 10th National Assembly. This means that voters have a meaningful choice in selecting individuals who they believe are capable, committed, and trustworthy.
At the same time, voters will also select members of the 5th Provincial People’s Councils, which are important local representative bodies that help promote development at the provincial level.
These councils work closely with local authorities to ensure that development projects meet the needs of citizens and reflect the realities of each province.
There are 1,041 candidates competing for 745 seats in these councils, a number that shows the strong participation of citizens in governance at the local level.
Several million Lao citizens are eligible to vote, and every one of those votes carries value. Whether a voter lives in a city or in a remote area, their decision contributes to national unity and democratic progress.
In many communities, election preparations are already visible. Posters and announcements remind people of the date. Local officials are coordinating with village authorities to ensure polling stations are ready. Community leaders are helping spread awareness so that voters understand the importance of their role and the procedures to be followed on Election Day.
For many citizens, voting is not just a civic duty but a proud tradition. Some voters say that Election Day is an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and think about what kind of future they want for their families. Others see it as a chance to support leaders who understand their community’s needs — whether it is better roads, improved schools, clean water systems, healthcare services, or more job opportunities.
The National Assembly and Provincial People’s Councils are key institutions for addressing these concerns. Members are expected to represent the voices of their constituents and bring forward issues that matter in everyday life.
In the National Assembly, representatives debate issues of national importance such as economic development strategies, the budget, public administration, education reform, environmental protection, and social welfare. Their decisions influence long-term development goals and the quality of life of the entire population.
Provincial People’s Councils, meanwhile, play an important role in strengthening local governance. They monitor development projects, evaluate provincial policies, and ensure that local priorities are considered in provincial planning. Their work helps connect local communities with broader national development plans.
Voters are encouraged to take time to consider candidates carefully. A good representative should demonstrate integrity, discipline, and a genuine willingness to serve the people. They should also have the ability to listen to citizens, understand challenges, and contribute ideas that support the country’s progress.
The elections are also significant because they reflect national unity and inclusion. Laos is home to many ethnic groups, each contributing to the richness of the country’s culture and identity. The elections are an opportunity for all ethnic groups to be represented, ensuring that the voices of all citizens are reflected in national and provincial decision-making.
As February 22 approaches, election officials are continuing to promote public awareness, reminding voters to check the information they’ve been given and prepare the necessary documents. Communities are being encouraged to participate actively and peacefully in the election process, ensuring that the day proceeds smoothly and in compliance with the regulations.
Ultimately, February 22 is more than an Election Day. It is a reminder that the nation’s development depends not only on policies and plans, but also on the participation of the people. Casting a vote is one of the most direct ways citizens can contribute to building a prosperous future for Laos.
Every ballot represents a voice. Every vote reflects a hope — for progress, stability, fairness, and prosperity.
As Lao citizens prepare to head to the polls, the message is clear: use your right, fulfil your duty, and help shape the future of Laos by selecting the best individuals to speak for you in the National Assembly and Provincial People’s Councils.
On February 22, the power is in the hands of the people.
