Grand Pi Mai Lao celebrations set to light up six provinces

As everyone joyfully anticipates the Lao New Year (Pi Mai Lao) celebrations taking place from April 14-16, the Lao Brewery Company has announced plans to organise one of the largest coordinated New Year events ever staged in the country.
The three-day event, titled ‘Beerlao Music Zone HYDRO BEATS 2026’, will take place simultaneously in six provinces, offering free entry to people aged 18 and above. The initiative aims to bring communities together to celebrate Pi Mai Lao through music, cultural activities, water play and shared festivities, in line with the spirit of renewal, unity, and joy that defines the Lao New Year.
According to the organisers, the event is designed to be safe and inclusive, reflecting the essence of Lao New Year traditions while incorporating modern entertainment elements. The programme includes live music performances throughout the day, designated water play zones to mark the symbolic New Year  cleansing, and a variety of food options available at each venue.
Events will be staged at public places including the Mekong riverfront in front of Vat Chan in Vientiane, Lane Xang Square in Luang Prabang, the Provincial Sports Stadium in Oudomxay, Anouvong Avenue in Thakhaek, Khammuan province, Savan ITECC in Savannakhet, and the KM2 Stadium in Champasak.
Pi Mai Lao is one of the most important cultural celebrations in Laos, traditionally marked by temple visits, Baci ceremonies, merit-making, and the symbolic pouring of water over Buddha images and elders to wash away accumulated bad luck and wish for good fortune in the year ahead.
Public celebrations feature music, dance, cultural performances and community gatherings, alongside the joyful water splashing that is the hallmark of the festival.
By hosting events across multiple provinces at the same time, the organisers aim to ensure broader participation and reduce overcrowding at single locations, while supporting local communities and creating shared festive spaces.
The celebrations build on the long-standing role of Pi Mai Lao as a time when families reunite, communities reconnect, and the country collectively reflects on its cultural heritage.
With free access and activities spread across the nation, HYDRO BEATS 2026 is intended to complement traditional observances and contribute to a positive and memorable New Year for the people of Laos.
The Lao New Year celebrations will officially take place from April 14 to 16, marking the transition to a new year with the values of harmony, renewal and togetherness at their core.
