Construction commences on 9.5 MW solar energy project in Salavan province
The construction of a 9.5 MW solar energy project officially commenced in Salavan province on Friday (May 29), marking another important step in Laos’ transition towards clean and sustainable energy development.
This new solar energy project in Salavan province is being described as an important contribution towards promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable energy production in Laos, in line with the government’s broader renewable energy development goals.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held at Taopoun village in Salavan district and province, and attended by senior provincial leaders, government officials, project developers and local authorities.
Among the distinguished guests were the member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council, Dr Daovong Phonekeo, the Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Committee, Mr Padeumphone Sonthany, and the Director of VS Solar One Co Ltd, Mr Soksavanh Phetrasy.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Soksavanh provided an overview of the project, and noted that the solar energy development will have a total installed capacity of 9.5 MW across three locations in Salavan province.
The project includes a 3 MW installation at Taopoun village in Salavan district, another 3 MW facility in the area of Phakkha village in Vapi district, and a 3.5 MW installation at Paloy village in Ta-Oy district.
Mr Soksavanh noted that memorandums on electricity pricing for all three projects have already been signed with the Electricite du Laos (EDL), while the official concession agreement was signed on November 13, 2025.
The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with electricity generated from the projects set to be supplied to communities across Salavan province. VS Engineering Co Ltd has been appointed as the project’s construction contractor.
The project’s developer, VS Solar One Co Ltd, has previously achieved success in implementing a solar energy project in Bolikhamxay province, which has a combined installed capacity of 7.5 MW across three locations.
According to the company, construction in Bolikhamxay is progressing rapidly, with plans to connect the project to the EDL power grid within June 2026. The company also plans to further expand the project’s installed capacity in Bolikhamxay province to 15 MW, while exploring additional solar energy developments in other parts of the country.
Following the ceremony, provincial leaders, company representatives and participants joined a ribbon-cutting event to officially launch the construction activities and took part in a tree-planting activity at the project site.
