President Thongloun explores China’s innovation hub during state visit
Hangzhou, China -- As part of his state visit to China from June 2-6, Lao President and Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith, visited Zhejiang province to witness China’s rapid advances in technology and rural development, highlighting new opportunities for enhanced Laos-China cooperation.
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Mr Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China, as the two countries celebrate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations during China-Laos Friendship Year 2026.
During his tour of Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, President Thongloun visited Yun Shenchu Technology Co., Ltd., one of the city’s leading high-tech enterprises and a member of the renowned “Six Little Dragons of Hangzhou” innovation cluster.
The Lao leader showed particular interest in the company’s advanced robotics technologies, including quadruped and humanoid robots.
In a demonstration that drew attention from local media, President Thongloun personally operated a quadruped robot, which successfully performed a series of agile movements, including rolls, handstands and rotations. Following the demonstration, he praised the technology as “very good and very flexible”.
The visit reflects Laos’ growing interest in innovation-driven development and emerging technologies, which are increasingly becoming important areas of cooperation between the two countries.
As Laos and China continue to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership, new productive forces represented by artificial intelligence, robotics, digital technology and green innovation are emerging as new engines for cooperation under the framework of building a Laos-China community with a shared future.
Observers note that technological innovation, digital transformation and sustainable development are becoming key pillars of bilateral cooperation, complementing major connectivity projects such as the Laos-China Railway and supporting broader socio-economic development goals in both countries.
Coinciding with President Thongloun’s visit, Yunnan Radio and Television had been broadcast a special Lao-language documentary titled “New Productivity × Belt and Road Initiative: Two-Way Empowerment” on Lao National Television on June 5.
The documentary explores practical cooperation between Laos and China in areas including the digital economy, clean energy, cross-border electricity networks, standards connectivity and people-centred development. It also highlights how both countries are working together to promote green growth, innovation and shared prosperity under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The programme is expected to provide audiences with a comprehensive overview of the expanding partnership between Laos and China and the opportunities arising from closer cooperation in technology, infrastructure and sustainable development.
