The purpose of this cooperation is to improve the overall information and communication services along the Laos-China Railway line from Vientiane to Luang Prabang province, covering a total length of 224 km. Based on the principles of leveraging each party’s strengths, building a strong alliance, driving innovation, and achieving mutual development, the two sides agreed to establish a strategic cooperative relationship, according to the Lao Telecommunication Public Company.
Under the agreement, Laos-China Railway Company Limited will allow Lao Telecommunication Public Company to lease telecommunications infrastructure resources – such as mobile signal transmitting and receiving stations, fibre-optic cables and related equipment. This will support Lao Telecommunication Public Company in building and operating a 4G mobile network along the Lao-China Railway corridor.
Furthermore, this initiative aims to meet passengers’ needs for fast, convenient data and mobile internet services, while upgrading service standards and creating a more seamless travel experience along the railway route.
The joint development will focus on installing, upgrading and expanding 4G telecommunications transmission stations and fibre-optic cables along the route. This includes coverage inside the stations and surrounding areas from Nakhae Station (Vientiane Capital) to Luang Prabang Station.
The 224-km project is divided into two phases, with a combined investment budget of more than US$8 million and a construction period of seven months. Phase I is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, providing network coverage to approximately 64 percent of the open area (excluding tunnels). Phase II will commence in early 2027. Once fully completed, the network will cover 90 percent of the entire Vientiane-Luang Prabang route, ensuring user access speeds of at least 3Mbps.
Lao Telecommunication Public Company remains committed to building comprehensive network infrastructure across Laos. By developing and introducing new technologies and innovations, the company aims to contribute to the nation’s growth, prosperity and digital modernisation, true to its motto: “Lao Telecom, telecommunications of the Lao people for Lao society.”
