President sends condolences after Philippines quake
President Thongloun Sisoulith has sent a message of condolence to Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr following the powerful earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on June 8.
In the message dated June 12, President Thongloun expressed sympathy to the Philippine government and people after the disaster caused loss of life and extensive damage in affected communities.
He said he was deeply saddened to learn of the earthquake, which caused severe loss of life and damage to property among people living in the affected areas.
His message read: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the powerful earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on 8 June 2026, which caused severe loss of life and damage to property for a great number of Filipino people residing in the affected areas.
“On behalf of the Lao Government and people, and in my own name, I wish to extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Your Excellency and, through you, to the Government and people of the Philippines, in particular to the families of the victims and all those affected by this disaster.
“I am confident that under the leadership and full attention of the Government and relevant authorities, the people of the Philippines will be able to overcome these difficulties and restore the affected areas to normalcy at the earliest opportunity.”
Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane too sent a message of condolence to Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P Lazaro, expressing sympathy to the Philippine government and people, especially the families of the victims and those affected by the earthquake.
He expressed confidence that the Philippines would overcome the disaster and restore the affected areas to normal as soon as possible.
