Russia Day
On June 12, we celebrate Russia Day – a national holiday in the Russian Federation. On June 12, 1990, the first Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR, part of the Soviet Union) adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR. In 1992, this day became officially known as the Day of Adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation. Later, in 2002, Russia Day got its current name and is now considered to be a holiday of liberty and civic peace.
On Russia Day, the country traditionally holds festive concerts, open air celebrations and sports events, with colourful fireworks in the evening around the country. On this day, the State Awards ceremonies for outstanding achievements in the field of science and technology, literature, art, and humanitarian activities are usually held in the Kremlin.
Russia Day is a main state holiday of our country, and a symbol of national unity, continuity of generations and spiritual revival. In the new geopolitical realities, the national holiday takes on special significance for us. Russia has made a conscious, sovereign choice in favour of building a fair world order, defending its national interests and traditional values. Now, we are especially acutely aware of how important the constant unity of our society is, the firm determination to stand up for the defence of our native land, to work for the common good and prosperity of the Fatherland.
Russia Day marks the continuity of centuries-old history, our devotion to our country, a warm, sincere attitude towards our beloved Motherland, and pride in its achievements. Our people have made a huge contribution to the progress of modern civilisation. Russia has given the world outstanding scientists and engineers, generals and politicians, writers and poets, artists and composers. We value the past and look to the future with hope: Future generations of Russians, without a doubt, will become worthy heirs and continue the glorious achievements of their ancestors.
From year to year, the Russian Federation confirms and strengthens its status as one of the most important players in the international arena and supports those who respect the primacy of international law, who are ready in practice to follow transparent and collegial approaches to solving pressing problems of our time.
This year we celebrate the Russia Day in a special atmosphere of the recent festivities in our country on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic war. The celebration has turned into a great international event, a manifestation of the growing international authority of the Russian Federation in the world. The representatives of several dozen states took part in the Victory Parade, including the high-level official delegation of the Lao PDR.
The combat unit of the Lao Army marched for the first time at the Red Square in Moscow during the Parade. And this fact once again emphasises the indestructible friendship between our two countries and mutual eagerness to promote our fraternal relations in different areas.
Nowadays, Russia celebrates its national day in difficult circumstances. But our nation hopes that in the nearest future, peace, justice and equity will be achieved.
While celebrating Russia Day in the friendly land of the Lao PDR, we should note the dynamic development of our bilateral relations, which cover the spheres of policy and security, new technologies, innovations, power industry, the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes, medicine, tourism, air communications, inter-bank interactions, and other areas. Special attention in our cooperation is paid to UXO clearance, which has been carried out by Russian Mine Clearance Units. Russian demining teams have already worked in Borikhamxay, Xieng Khuang, Khammuan, Vientiane, and recently in Huaphan province. Furthermore, over the past years, Russia has been implementing a number of programmes in the Lao PDR in the spheres of public health, human resources, and professional skill development. A large-scale renovation project of the Laos-Soviet “Mittaphab” Hospital is being implemented with the goal of contributing to the development of high-tech healthcare infrastructure in Laos.
Our National Holiday – “Day of Russia” – is a symbol of independence and sovereignty, national unity and freedom. It unites all those who are proud of the heroic past of the Motherland, who look to its future with confidence, who are passionately and responsibly building its present.
And now Russia is a completely independent and powerful state, opposing hegemonic ideology and advocating a fair multipolar world order.
President Vladimir Putin said in his congratulatory address to Russians: “Our common goal is a powerful, confident, strong Russia, open to partnership and cooperation, a county in which it is comfortable and safe to live, where people can achieve success with their honest work and talent.”
