Hungary supports water and wastewater management in Vientiane

Driven by economic growth, urbanisation, and rising living standards, the demand for clean and safe water continues to increase worldwide, making sustainable water management a key priority for the future. To address this, the Embassy of Hungary, in collaboration with Hungarian firm Laoprojekt Ltd, organised an event on June 12 to mark World Water Day.
The event brought together officials, experts, engineering students, and teachers to demonstrate the operation of a Hungarian-built Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dongbang village and a wastewater treatment plant in Khamngoi village, Xaysettha district, Vientiane.

The Economic and Trade Attaché of Hungary gives an address to mark World Water Day.

The group visited both facilities, received detailed presentations on technical aspects, and were introduced to the implementing companies.
Since 2017, the Government of Hungary has provided concessional tied aid loans worth US$115 million to enhance water and wastewater management in Vientiane.
The works implemented under the “Water Treatment Project” were carried out by the H2O Consortium, led by Laoprojekt Ltd, with Hungarian companies playing a leading role. Through close collaboration with Lao partners, these projects not only delivered technical and environmental benefits but also further strengthened economic cooperation and business relations between Hungary and Laos.
An existing Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dongbang village, with a daily capacity of 20,000 cubic metres, was modernised, and a new plant was built between 2020 and 2023 to produce an additional 24,000 cubic metres of water per day, reaching a total capacity of 44,000 cubic metres per day.
Additionally, the first centralised wastewater treatment plant in Laos was built in Khamngoi village with a 26,000 cubic metre daily capacity, which is now being expanded with an additional 26,000 cubic metres.
These projects contribute to the socio-economic development of Laos by improving the living conditions of tens of thousands of households in the capital, while also providing job opportunities for many local companies.
Hungary is also active in the field of education, offering up to 150 scholarships each year to Lao applicants to pursue studies in Hungary, including water management and engineering courses, under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme (https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu/).
