Participants gather to discuss the rubber plantation project in Bokeo province.

Lao locality partner with Chinese firm to launch large rubber plantation project

Authorities in Paktha district, Bokeo province, are partnering with a Chinese rubber firm in a 30-year project, under which rubber trees will be planted on an area of 5,000 hectares.
A meeting was held last week in the district to discuss the project, bringing together the representatives from the district and the Rubber Factory Co., Ltd.
Head of Planning and Investment Office of the district, Mr Amphone Inthanon, presented the details of the agreement between both sides.
The agreement aims to balance the interests of three parties—the state, investors, and the public—by ensuring that investments comply with Lao laws, while engaging local communities in land development.
This collaboration aims to maximise benefits for all parties through sustainable socio-economic development.
It is also linked to environmental protection by promoting industrial tree planting to create green spaces, generate employment, and support stable incomes.
The ultimate goal is to boost family income and reduce poverty.
The partnership spans 30 years and covers an area of 5,000 hectares, with a total investment of US$1.5 million. The investors will provide rubber seedlings and training in planting, maintenance, and rubber tapping techniques.
Under the seedling supply contract, the factory will distribute rubber seedlings free of charge and without restrictions.
However, once farmers receive and plant the seedlings, they are obliged to sell the harvested rubber latex to the factory, as outlined in a mutually agreed contract.
Acting District Governor Mr Khamchanh Inthachak urged all parties to fully comply with the terms of the agreement for the shared benefit of all stakeholders.
