The plan will be known as the Master Plan for the Development and Management of the National Tourism Area in Vangvieng district.
The decision to exercise central level control over the development of Vangvieng as a tourist destination was taken by cabinet members attending the monthly government meeting, which was chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The development plan will be implemented by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and other government bodies and will take into account the various challenges facing the area and the best path going forward.
The formulation of a specific plan will enable the development of the area to take place in a controlled and systematic manner.
Developments must be carried out in line with the land development plan, environmental protection plan, and other plans laid down by the government.
Funding must be made available for the maintenance and development of tourism, and plans to address inappropriate activities in the area must be clearly spelled out. Specific areas of Vangvieng district such as the Nam Xong river, rice farms and other areas of crop cultivation, as well as certain tourist activities, will be at the centre of planned developments.
Central and local authorities will be required to draw up a system of environmental protection based on the need for cleanliness, safety, green spaces, and sustainability.
In addition, authorities will seek opinions from various sectors of society for input into the development plans for Vangvieng.
The meeting also agreed to create documents detailing personal information and containing photos of each family member and to issue identity cards, for the purposes of the upcoming population census.
This will be implemented by the Ministry of Public Security and other government bodies to ensure the census takes place efficiently and that civil registration is modernised and orderly.
The meeting also heard a report on significant events taking place in relation to foreign affairs this month, and the focus of future plans.
