Lawmakers to review rural poverty agenda, economy and budget reforms
The National Assembly will hold an extraordinary session next week to review the economy, poverty reduction efforts, and financial reforms.
The first Extraordinary Session of the 10th National Assembly Legislature will take place from July 6-10, when lawmakers will consider a series of urgent issues aimed at supporting Laos' socio-economic development during the second half of the year.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the National Assembly Standing Committee and Head of the National Assembly Office, Mr Bounchan Sivongphanh, said the five-day session would be held under Article 58 of the amended Law on the National Assembly and Resolution No. 169 of the National Assembly Standing Committee, issued on June 30.
The main focus of the session will be the government's report on the National Socio-Economic Development Plan, the State Budget Plan and the Monetary Plan for the first six months of 2026. Lawmakers will also examine priorities for the remaining six months of the year as the government works to maintain economic stability and improve public finances.
Members are expected to assess progress made during the first half of the year and discuss measures to strengthen economic growth, improve budget management, and support national development goals.
The National Assembly will also consider and adopt the National Agenda on Rural Development and Poverty Reduction, one of the government's priority programmes to improve living standards and reduce poverty across the country.
The agenda is expected to guide efforts to expand economic opportunities, improve public services, and promote balanced development between urban and rural areas.
Another major item on the agenda is the draft Law on the State Treasury, which is being introduced for the first time, along with amendments to the Law on the State Budget. These are intended to strengthen the management of state finances, improve budget planning, and support more effective use of public funds.
To assist the discussions, the National Assembly Standing Committee will present two reports covering the government's six-month socio-economic performance and the National Agenda on Rural Development and Poverty Reduction.
Lawmakers are expected to vote on four resolutions adopting the government's six-month report and plans for the remainder of 2026, the National Agenda on Rural Development and Poverty Reduction, the new Law on the State Treasury, and the amended Law on the State Budget.
Mr Bounchanh invited officials, civil servants, members of the armed forces, students, workers, intellectuals, business operators, Lao people of all ethnic groups, and overseas Lao communities to follow the proceedings of the session.
He also encouraged the public to share comments and proposals with the National Assembly. The National Assembly Office has opened three channels for public feedback, including hotline number 156, which will operate during office hours from July 3-10, an email addressnalao.156@gmail.com, and the Laona mobile application.
The public's views will be submitted to the National Assembly for consideration during the session, giving citizens another opportunity to contribute to discussions on national development and public policy.
