New building opens at Mother and Child Hospital

A newly building at the Mother and Child Hospital in Nongphaya village, Xaythany district, opened to the public last week.
The building was constructed under a public-private partnership agreement between the hospital and Litpanya Architect Construction Co., Ltd.
Minister of Health Dr Bounfeng Phommalaysith and the President of Litpanya Architect Construction Co., Ltd., Ms Sunatta Litpanya, together with senior officials from the hospital and the ministry attended the inauguration and handover of the building.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Bounfeng said the new facility was part of the ministry’s public health policy and development plans to meet patient needs.
The new facilities will allow a better standard of healthcare to be provided for mothers and infants, he added.
It is envisaged that the new facility will help reduce the high maternal and infant mortality rate, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals relating to health. It will also support the government’s aim to achieve universal health coverage by 2025.
Improved healthcare services are at the heart of efforts to improve the well-being and development of the country as a whole, the minister added.
It is expected that the hospital will provide practical clinical training to medical students and that it will become a large teaching hospital.
Everyone involved will work to improve the quality of clinical examinations, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and health promotion and education.
The hospital will comply with the health reform strategy laid down by the ministry and the minister will do his best to ensure that health services are effective and responsive to the needs of the public.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Ms Sunatta said the new 3-storey building is 32.6 metres wide and 59 metres long. It contains 50 rooms, divided into four types, namely 1 VIP luxury room, 21 special VIP rooms, 2 luxury rooms, 4 deluxe rooms, 22 other rooms, and a nurses’ room.
There is also a reception area, a 24-hour nurse’s desk, baby bath service, pharmacy, administrative offices, restaurant, coffee shop, and a small grocery store.
The building is equipped with a special electrical system including backup power, video system, CCTV, Internet access, water, waste water, and other systems, she said.
A total of 144.6 million kip (approximately US$6.4 million) was invested in the project.
The company invested 101.2 million kip (US$4.5 million) in the construction of the building, which covers 3,700 square metres and took about three years to build.
The new facility supports the objectives of Japan’s cooperation with Laos to improve systems, deliver better medical services, and develop and create more learning and training environments for nursing and medical students.
