Jail for 15 govt officials found guilty of corruption
 
The Attapeu Provincial People’s Court last week sentenced 15 government officials to prison in one of the province’s largest corruption cases, with 10 of those convicted being life sentences.
The Attapeu Provincial Public Security Office said the verdicts were announced on July 30 following proceedings at the court. The court’s Head of Office, Mrs Lattana Simavath, outlined the details of the case during a press briefing held on the same day.
The offences were committed between 2021 and 2024 and involved a coordinated scheme led by Mr Soulixay Souliyalai. The group was found to have conspired to misappropriate funds from eight provincial budget allocations.
The court heard that the total value of the funds involved 103 billion kip, US$2,356,000, and 1.5 billion Vietnamese dong. The Vietnamese currency was reportedly converted into kip and baht.
Following an investigation conducted by a special taskforce, authorities determined that the actual financial losses to Attapeu province totalled 51 billion kip, US$2,316,000, and 60,000 baht.
The court’s Criminal Chamber heard the case after receiving an indictment from the Head of the Attapeu Provincial People’s Prosecution Office. The court reviewed the evidence presented before convening a hearing on July 30.
At the conclusion of the hearing on the same day, the court convicted all 15 government officials on corruption-related charges.
The case is regarded as one of the most significant in Attapeu province involving corruption and reflects the authorities’ continued efforts to combat fraud and misconduct within the public sector.
