“Korean Government Awards Scholarships to 13 Lao Students for 2026” 

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Laos, in cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), held the 2026 Korean Government Scholarship Award Ceremony at the Embassy in Vientiane on July 31.
The event was attended by approximately 50 participants, including the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Mr Lee Dong-gyu; the Deputy Director General of the International Finance and Cooperation Department, Mr Chanpasith Sengphaathit; the Country Director of the KOICA Laos, Oh Sung-soo; the Country Representative of the KOFIH Laos Office, Park Wonseok; scholarship recipients; alumni of Korean Scholarship Programmes; and Lao government officials.
A total of 13 Lao students received scholarship certificates, including 11 Global Korea Scholarship recipients, one recipient of the KOICA CIAT (Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tomorrow) Scholarship Programme, and one KOFIH scholarship recipient. 
The scholars will pursue master’s or doctoral degree programmes in the Republic of Korea in various academic fields.
In his opening remarks, Mr Lee congratulated the scholarship recipients and noted that the ceremony recognised their dedication and potential while reaffirming the shared commitment of the Republic of Korea and Laos to education and human resource development. 
He further highlighted that people-to-people exchanges have been central to Korea-Laos relations over the past 30 years. Lao students who studied in Korea are now serving as bridges between the two countries across government, universities and businesses in Laos. 
He encouraged the recipients to remain resilient during their studies in Korea, bring their knowledge and experience back to Laos, and contribute to the country’s development in areas such as industry, the economy, education and society.
Concluding his remarks, Mr Lee expressed confidence that the recipients will become future leaders and bridges between the two countries, helping to shape the next 30 years of Korea-Laos relations.
He wished them a meaningful and successful academic journey in Korea.
The ceremony also featured congratulatory remarks from Mr Chanpasith, who expressed appreciation to the government of the Republic of Korea and the participating organisations for their continued support in developing Lao human resources.
He encouraged the scholarship recipients to make the most of the opportunity to study in Korea and to contribute to the future development of Laos upon their return.
Following the ceremony, alumni of Korean Scholarship Programmes shared their experiences of studying in Korea and offered practical advice on graduate studies, research, and student life, giving new scholars a clearer sense of what to expect during their academic journey in Korea.
The event concluded with a networking session among scholarship recipients, alumni and representatives of participating organisations.
The ceremony reaffirmed the Republic of Korea’s continued commitment to supporting human resource development in Laos and strengthening the longstanding partnership between Korea and Laos through education and international cooperation.
