LFND commemorates 76th anniversary, recalls historic contributions

The Lao Front for National Development (LFND) commemorated its 76th anniversary on Thursday, highlighting its historic role in promoting national unity and mobilising the people to contribute to the country’s liberation, defence and development.
The anniversary ceremony was held at the Central LFND Office in Vientiane, where Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Politburo member of the Party Central Committee and President of the Central LFND, delivered a speech recalling the organisation’s establishment, development and major achievements since its founding on August 13, 1950.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr Kikeo highlighted the circumstances, conditions and fun-damental factors that led to the establishment of the organisation, as well as its role and historical mission through three major periods under different names.
From 1950 to 1956, the organisation operated as the Neo Lao Issara (Lao Freedom Front). During this period, it represented the Party in promoting unity and solidarity among the Lao people and contributed to the struggle for national liberation, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
From 1956 to 1979, the organisation operated as the Neo Lao Hak Xat (Lao Patriotic Front). During this period, it continued to unite and mobilise people of all ethnic groups to participate in the national revolutionary movement.
The Lao Patriotic Front played an important role in mobilising the people to rise up and seize power nationwide on August 23, 1975, contributing to the establishment of the new political system on December 2, 1975.
Since 1979, the organisation has operated under its present name, the Neo Lao Sang Xat (Lao Front for National Development). It has continued to mobilise the people to contribute to national development and fulfil the country’s strategic tasks under its reform-oriented development direction.
The LFND has served as a platform for strengthening unity and solidarity among ethnic groups, social classes, religious communities and Lao people living abroad. It has also carried out people-to-people diplomacy with strategic partner countries, neighbouring countries and other countries in the region and internationally.
The organisation has contributed to monitoring the performance of duties by National Assembly members, government agencies and civil servants, while serving as an important link between the Party and State and the people.
On the same occasion, Dr Kikeo called on Party members, officials and staff of the LFND to continue studying and researching the organisation’s historical origins, development and experiences.
He urged them to strengthen their political awareness, knowledge and professional capabilities, and to develop themselves into capable core cadres who can effectively fulfil their responsibilities and contribute to the continued development of the LFND.
As part of the activities marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the LFND, Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune also led the LFND Central Committee in a tour of the Lao Front for National Development Heritage House.
The LFND President laid a flower basket in front of the statue of President Souphanouvong as a mark of respect and gratitude for his contributions to the nation.
He then led the delegation on a tour of the museum, where they viewed historical documents, artefacts and other materials highlighting the history, proud heritage and significant achievements of the Lao Issara Front and the Neo Lao Hak Xat in the past, as well as the contributions and development of the Lao Front for National Development.
The event was also attended by former LFND President Dr Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, other former LFND leaders, members of the LFND Central Committee, families of LFND leaders, LFND officials and other guests, who gathered to commemorate the organisation’s founding.
