Special events celebrate the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, including a flag-hoisting ceremony.

Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day brings communities together in Vientiane

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vientiane marked the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia with a flag-hoisting ceremony followed by a Syukuran Rakyat (People’s  Celebration), bringing together Indonesian citizens and diaspora, Friends of Indonesia, and young Indonesian visitors in a celebration of national pride, culture and friendship between Indonesia and Laos.
The programme began with a solemn Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Embassy premises. The ceremony served as a moment for Indonesians in Laos to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founders and reaffirm their commitment to contributing positively to Indonesia and strengthening its relations with the international community.

The celebration continued with Syukuran Rakyat, featuring cultural performances by participants of the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) programme and Cultural Class. The performances included the Nawung Sekar and Yapong dances, angklung music, and Indonesian national songs, showcasing Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage while promoting cultural exchange with the local community.
The event was attended by members of the Indonesian community and Friends of Indonesia, including the President of the Lao Indonesian Friendship Association (LIFA), the Lao Pencak Silat Federation, Indonesian alumni, and representatives of Muslim communities in Laos.
A symbolic tumpeng, a traditional Indonesian ceremonial rice dish, and an Independence Day cake were cut by the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim (CDA) of the Embassy and the Indonesian Defence Attaché. The tradition expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s independence and hopes for continued unity, peace and prosperity.
The CDA highlighted the 81st Independence Day theme, “Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia”, encouraging Indonesians to contribute to a stronger and more prosperous nation. For Indonesians abroad, this spirit also means maintaining Indonesia’s good image, building positive relations with local communities, and contributing to stronger international partnerships.
The CDA further emphasised that Indonesia-Laos relations are built not only through government-to-government cooperation, but also through people-to-people connections. Indonesian communities and Friends of Indonesia play an important role in strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
The celebration also looked ahead to 2027, when Indonesia and Laos will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The milestone provides an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation and people-to-people ties, including through culture, education, tourism and other areas of mutual interest.
For the Indonesian community in Vientiane, the celebration was not only a commemoration of Indonesia’s independence, but also an opportunity to share Indonesian culture, strengthen community ties and reaffirm the enduring friendship between the peoples of Indonesia and Laos.
