Ministry, provinces elect new Party leaders
Party congresses at a ministry and several provinces have elected new leaders to head their Party Committees and lead the state bodies for the 2026 - 2030 term.
On Wednesday, Dr Santisouk Simmalavong was elected Secretary of the Ministry of Technology and Communications’ Party Committee, succeeding Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara.
A day earlier, Bolikhamxay’s 8th Party Congress elected Mr Sonthanou Thammavong as Secretary of the provincial Party Committee. On the same day, Luang Namtha’s 9th Party Congress chose Mr Viengsavath Siphandone as Secretary of the northern province’s Party Committee.
Earlier this week, the 9th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union elected Mr Thongly Sisoulith as Secretary General, replacing Mr Monxay Laomuaxong.
These once-every-five-year leadership elections are being held in preparation for the National Party Congress, expected early next year, where the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party will select its top leadership.
According to procedure, district Party Congresses first elect new Secretaries and Committees, some of whom are chosen to attend provincial congresses. Provincial and ministerial congresses then elect their leaders, with selected members advancing to the National Party Congress.
At the National Congress, delegates will elect a new Party Central Committee, which will then hold its first session to select the Politburo, the Party Secretary General, and the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat.
