PTTLAO, Khounkham Logistics sign LNG deal to support Laos’ clean energy transition

PTT (Laos) Co., Ltd. (PTTLAO) and Khounkham Logistics Co., Ltd. have signed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreement aimed at expanding LNG use in Laos’ transport sector and supporting the country’s transition towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy system.
The agreement, signed on August 5, will also promote the development of the energy and logistics sectors and contribute to Laos’ goal of strengthening its role as a regional transport and logistics hub as it moves towards becoming a “Land-Linked Country”.
Under the agreement, the two companies will cooperate in two main areas: operating an LNG buy-and-sell business as a model for expanding LNG use in the transport sector, and developing sustainable business and investment models to support the growth of the LNG market, including potential expansion into the industrial sector.
Managing Director of PTTLAO, Mr Peerawet Na Ranong, said the agreement marked another important step in the company’s cooperation with Khounkham Logistics to promote LNG use, upgrade the transport sector and support the future expansion of Laos’ energy market.
PTTLAO has already developed Laos’ first LNG refuelling station for trucks in Khammuan Province. The company plans to expand LNG sales and service coverage to meet growing demand and establish an LNG ecosystem linking supply and distribution with end users in the transport and industrial sectors.
LNG has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and PM2.5 fine particulate matter compared with certain other fuel types, while improving energy efficiency and potentially lowering fuel costs. These advantages could make LNG a viable option in the energy transition of the transport and industrial sectors.
The cooperation is expected to help support Laos’ efforts to strengthen transport connectivity and logistics infrastructure. As the country seeks to develop its position as a regional logistics hub, LNG could contribute to the transport sector, mobility and related economic activities.
PTTLAO also plans to draw on the knowledge, technology and experience of PTT Public Company Limited to support the development of LNG infrastructure and business ecosystems in Laos.
The signing ceremony was attended by Director General of the Department of Processing Industry under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Dr Bounpheng Sibounheuang; Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Thailand in Vientiane, Mr Phanthana Pakobchat; Managing Director of Khounkham Logistics, Mr Nuanta Rachamontee; and Executive Vice President of Natural Gas Business and Product Marketing at PTT Public Company Limited, Mr Piyawat Sewatanan, along with government officials and business partners.
The partnership between PTTLAO, Khounkham Logistics and PTT Public Company Limited is expected to contribute to the development of Laos’ LNG market and the upgrading of its energy and logistics infrastructure, supporting more stable, efficient and environmentally friendly growth.
The initiative is also intended to generate long-term benefits for Laos’ energy, transport and industrial sectors while contributing to the country’s sustainable energy development.
