Jewellery contest showcases cultural identity at Lao Gold Festival

A number of well-recognised gold and jewellery designers and artisans showcased their creative talents at a competition held during the inaugural Lao Gold Festival 2025, receiving positive feedback for their exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to cultural preservation.
The competition, held on the sidelines of the festival in Vientiane from September 5-7, underscored the importance of blending modern innovation with the preservation of traditional Lao cultural identity.

Vice President of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI), Mr Thanongsinh Kanlagna (right), presents prizes to the first and second runners-up from Phouvong Gold & Jewellery Shop and Bountem Gold & Jewellery Shop, respectively, at the contest.

Organised to provide a platform for Lao designers and artisans to demonstrate their creativity and technical skills, the competition encouraged the development of contemporary gold jewellery designs that reflect the nation’s rich heritage.
The event also aimed to raise production standards to international levels, foster collaboration between designers and investors, and strengthen national pride in Lao culture.
Numerous gold shops from across the country submitted entries to the contest, with several outstanding designs receiving top accolades.
Samlane Jewellery Shop claimed first prize with its piece titled “Dok Champa (Plumeria)”. Inspired by the national flower of Laos, the design symbolises prosperity and national pride. The piece incorporates traditional motifs with warm gold tones to reflect unity and the completeness of the community.

Phouvong Gold and Jewellery Shop was awarded second prize for its design “The Charm of Naga Patterns”. Drawing on the UNESCO-recognised Naga motif, the entry expressed deeply rooted cultural beliefs and Lao identity, reinterpreted as a refined piece of world-class jewellery.
Third prize went to Bountem Gold & Jewellery Shop for its design “Lao Dok Champa Garland”. Traditionally used in ceremonies to express respect and gratitude, the garland was reimagined to highlight community interconnectedness through intricate goldwork.
Organisers said the competition was a significant step forward in advancing the Lao gold industry and building its international reputation while also safeguarding cultural heritage.
The Lao Bullion Bank and the Lao Gold, Jewellery and Gems Association are expected to play an increasingly active role in promoting gold-related activities, supporting designers and entrepreneurs, and enhancing community involvement in the sector.
In addition to celebrating Lao creativity, the competition aims to foster sustainable development within the industry and position Laos as a competitive player in the global jewellery market.
