Temporary use of BRT lane permitted to ease traffic congestion
Authorities in Vientiane have announced the temporary opening of the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane to general traffic during peak hours to ease congestion in the capital.
The initiative, led by Vientiane’s Department of Public Works and Transport (DPWT), comes ahead of the official launch of the BRT system and is designed to alleviate pressure on key routes during the morning and evening rush hours.
According to notification 7011/DPWT, issued on September 15, the BRT lane will be open to private vehicles during specified hours on weekdays.
In the morning, traffic will be allowed to use the lane from 6.30 am to 9 am, inbound from View Mall (KM 7) to the 450th Anniversary roundabout toward the city centre.
In the evening, vehicles can use the lane from 4 pm to 6.30 pm in the opposite direction, heading outbound from the 450th Anniversary roundabout to View Mall.
Authorities have stressed that the lane remains off-limits outside of these designated periods. Motorists are prohibited from crossing the BRT kerb or damaging road infrastructure such as signs and barriers.
The DPWT warned that any violations will be subject to enforcement measures.
Individuals, organisations and business entities, both local and foreign, found to be in breach of the rules will face penalties in accordance with Decree No 568/Govt, dated September 16, 2021.
Offenders may be required to cover the costs of repairing or replacing any damaged public property.
The DPWT’s notification stressed that this temporary measure is part of broader efforts to address Vientiane’s long-standing traffic challenges while preparing for the full operation of the BRT system.
The temporary use of the lane is expected to improve traffic flow, especially in high-density corridors, and offer short-term relief to commuters.
As the city continues to grow, authorities in Vientiane remain focused on developing a more efficient and sustainable transport network to better serve the needs of residents.
Kaysone Phomvihane Road is currently experiencing heavy congestion during peak hours for both inbound and outbound traffic, even though the road has been widened with additional lanes on both sides.
According to the initial plan, a total of 27 boarding and disembarking stations were to be built for the BRT system, with the project originally expected to begin partial operations in September.
Services were planned to be launched in two phases – a three-month free trial period, followed by the official start of operations.
However, according to a recent update provided by project officials in mid-August, full operations are now scheduled for December or early 2026.
The BRT system is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce road accidents, improve air quality, and cut costs for commuters in Vientiane.
