Laos, Russia move closer to signing MoU on judicial cooperation

The Lao and Russian governments are working towards the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on judicial cooperation, as a basis for further strengthening the two countries’ long-standing ties, according to Pathedlao.
The President of Laos’ People’s Supreme Court, Mrs Viengthong Siphandone, discussed the planned MOU while attending the XIII International Legal Forum of Asia-Pacificia in Russia earlier this week.
The Lao and Russian delegations agreed on the need for closer cooperation to strengthen the organisation, as well as higher standards among court judges and other judicial officials in the management of cases brought before Lao courts.
The two sides agreed to continue their partnership in preparing to sign an MOU on judicial cooperation, saying they wished to share their experiences in court administration.
This would include the oversight of civil cases in line with the Law on Civil Procedure and the role of the Supreme People’s Court as stipulated in the Constitution.
Short-term training for judges would be provided on the best ways to handle cases related to trade, banking, and bankruptcy, as well as upgrading the education of judges to the university (degree) level.
The meeting was viewed as an important milestone in strengthening the relationship between Lao and Russian judicial institutions.
The talks coincide with the 65th anniversary of Lao-Russian diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Lao-Russian and Russia-Laos Friendship Associations.
During the meeting, the President of the Supreme People’s Court of Laos invited the President of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to visit Laos to further discuss and sign the Memorandum of Understanding.
