Korea’s Saemaul Foundation equips Vientiane schools with digital classrooms

More Lao students are set to gain IT skills following the opening of two newly equipped computer classrooms in Vientiane on Tuesday September 29, 2026, funded by the Saemaul Foundation and South Korea’s Gyeongsangbuk-do province.
The new digital learning facilities, located at Naxone Secondary School in Pakngum district and the Department of Korean Language at the National University of Laos (NUOL), mark a major expansion of the Cultural Digital Saemaul Undong initiative in Laos.
The project aims to bridge the digital divide among students while deepening educational and cultural ties between Laos and the Republic of Korea.
Speaking at the launch events, Director of the Saemaul Foundation Laos Office, Ms Moon Sunghye, extended her gratitude to local authorities, NUOL leadership, teachers, and partner organisations for their collaboration.

Officials, school representatives, and Saemaul Foundation  together with NUOL faculty members and Korean-language students during the handover ceremony at the National University of Laos.

First introduced last year at Somsavard and Don secondary schools in Pakngum district, the scheme expanded its footprint this year to equip Naxone Secondary School with 11 new computers, a 75-inch television, a printer, audio equipment, desks, and chairs.
Director General of the Vientiane Department of Education and Sports, Ms Bouavone Souklaseang, praised the foundation’s continuous support, stressing that modern digital infrastructure is vital for secondary school students’ development.
At NUOL, a dedicated computer laboratory was provided for the Department of Korean Language, featuring 23 desktop computers loaded with Hancom Office software, a laser printer, and an 85-inch television screen.
The Dean of NUOL’s Faculty of Letters, Ms Thongmala Phosikham, said building students’ digital capabilities is essential for developing a skilled workforce, noting that the new facility will specifically enhance practical Korean-language document processing skills.
In a collaborative gesture, NUOL’s Department of Korean Language also provided eight computers and monitors for Naxone Secondary School to further boost learning resources.
The newly-equipped classrooms reflect the growing cooperation between Laos and the Republic of Korea in equipping the nation’s youth to engage in an increasingly digital economy.
