Lao handicraft festival opens, tying tradition to tourism

The 24th Lao Handicraft Festival opened on the evening of October 22, launching a five-day showcase dedicated to preserving and promoting the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
The event, running until October 26, is taking place at the new Traditional Lao Silk Residence, located next to the Presidential Office on Fa Ngum Road.
The grand opening was attended by high-ranking officials, including Vice President of Laos Mrs Pany Yathotou, the President’s wife Mrs Naly Sisoulith, ministers and ambassadors, while representatives from international organisations were also in attendance.
President of the Lao Handicraft Association, Mrs Souvita Paserd, said  the 2025 festival is designed to highlight the strong connection between culture and the economy.
The fair is organised under the powerful slogan: “Craftsmanship is a Tourism Paradise” (also phrased as “Crafts are the Heart of Tourism”), and the thematic focus: “Weaving and Tying Love: Conserving Wedding Traditions”.
The festival also marks National Handicraft Day on November 1 and is one of many events taking place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao PDR.
As well as serving as a major platform for the display and sale of handicraft products, it enables knowledge-sharing among the more than 130 participating artisans and business operators about production techniques, design, and quality.
The Traditional Lao Silk Residence, a facility dedicated to exhibiting ancient Lao textiles, is hosting the festival.
The venue features more than 130 exhibition booths showcasing a wide variety of artisanal goods including silk and cotton textiles, jewellery and ornaments fashioned from silver, gold and gems, and basketry and woven goods made from rattan and bamboo.
Other items on display include pottery, wood carvings and paintings, while stalls also sell traditional snacks, organic produce, and herbal drinks.
The festival promises to be more than a commercial fair, offering a vibrant cultural programme.
Live demonstrations feature artisans from various provinces reproducing traditional handicraft techniques,while visitors can also explore a recreation of the “Ancient Market Way of Life”.
In addition, expert-led talks to provide a deeper understanding of Lao traditions are scheduled for October 23.
Another highlight of the event will be a procession to celebrate National Handicraft Day on the morning of October 25, starting from the Monument.
As a grand finale, a Lao Fashion Show will take place on the evening of October 27 at the Landmark Hotel, featuring traditional wedding costumes and ethnic attire that highlight the beauty, symbolism, and diversity of Lao textile traditions.
