Laos, S. Korea partner to advance agricultural technology

Laos and South Korea are strengthening cooperation in agricultural technology innovation and development through a new partnership aimed at improving product quality, promoting technology transfer, and enhancing the technical skills of farmers and agricultural cooperatives.
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Cooperatives (DAEC), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of the Lao PDR, and South Korean company ELE SANGSA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 22 in Cheongju, South Korea, establishing a framework for cooperation in agricultural technology innovation and development.
The agreement aims to promote technical knowledge exchange, encourage the application of modern agricultural technologies and develop practical solutions to meet the needs of farmers and agricultural cooperatives in Laos.
The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Counsellor at the Lao Embassy in South Korea, Ms Khamfong Sayalath, alongside deputy directors-general, deputy division directors, representatives of relevant centres and officials from ELE SANGSA.
The company’s delegation included its chief executive officer, senior managing director and research institute director, as well as the chairman of Dilao Company and other stakeholders.
The MoU was signed by DAEC Director General Dr Anongsone Phommachane on behalf of the Lao PDR and ELE SANGSA Chief Executive Officer Park Yong Chul, representing the company’s chairman.
Under the agreement, the two parties will promote technical cooperation and knowledge exchange in agricultural product drying and quality improvement, including the sharing of experiences, information and modern technologies. The partnership is intended to support better post-harvest handling and help maintain the quality of agricultural products.
The initiative also aims to strengthen human resource development through improved training curricula, technology transfer and professional skills development in agricultural mechanisation. These activities will be geared towards the practical needs of farmers, agricultural cooperatives and the labour market.
Another area of cooperation involves demonstrating, testing and developing innovative drying equipment and agricultural machinery, while facilitating the transfer of advanced technologies to farming communities. These efforts are intended to help farmers access suitable equipment and improve agricultural processing practices.
The two parties will also explore opportunities to mobilise technical and financial support from relevant ministries, government agencies, official development assistance (ODA) programmes and other potential partners to advance joint activities.
The agreement provides a framework for further collaboration between Laos and South Korea in applying agricultural technology to practical production needs. Through knowledge-sharing, skills development and technology demonstration, the partnership seeks to support agricultural modernisation, improve product quality and strengthen the capacity of farmers and cooperatives.
By linking technical expertise with the needs of farming communities, the cooperation offers a basis for developing more effective agricultural practices and supporting the longer-term development of Laos’ agricultural sector.
