Laos marks World Food Day with pledge to end​ hunger​

With the world confronting economic turbulence, climate shocks, and growing food insecurity, Laos is focusing on hope and resilience, marking the 45th World Food Day and the 33rd National Week for Poverty Eradication with a powerful message — that ending hunger begins at home, in the nation’s fields and farms.
The occasion highlights Laos’ steady progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in combatting hunger and poverty.
Despite facing the same pressures as other nations, the country’s agriculture sector has continued to grow through strong collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, local authorities, development partners, and private enterprises.
According to official figures, the production of major food items, including rice, meat, eggs, and fish, was largely sufficient to meet domestic demand.
Agricultural and forestry exports exceeded US$1.54 billion, surpassing the national plan of US$1.5 billion, seen as a testament to the resilience and potential of Lao farmers.
Looking ahead, the government pledges to continue advancing a modern, green, and sustainable agricultural system, focusing on integrated farming, improved infrastructure, and effective natural resource management.
Efforts will also emphasise clean and Good Agricultural Practices to ensure safe food supplies and grow high-quality agricultural produce for export.
In his message marking the occasion, Minister​ of​ Agriculture​ and​ Environment, Dr​ Linkham​ Douangsavanh,​ said​ ​fighting poverty and hunger is a national priority that requires the collective effort of all sectors, from policymakers and international partners to local farmers and business operators.
“We must turn this year’s World Food Day theme into concrete action,” he said. “Together, we can build a resilient, food-secure, and sustainable future for all.”
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and other senior officials attended the event.
The event serves as both a reflection of progress and a call to action, reminding everyone that ending hunger begins with sustainable agriculture, unity, and shared responsibility.
