Study in Europe Tour: Deputy education minister urges students to apply for European scholarships

The Study in Europe Tour kicked off in Vientiane on Saturday, November 22, with the fair welcoming more than 500 Lao students, teachers, researchers, and other participants eager to explore hundreds of study and scholarship opportunities across Europe.
Now in its fourth year, the event is a joint effort between the European Union, the Global Gateway initiative, EU Member States, and Lao education authorities.
The tour will continue in the northern province of Luang Prabang on November 25 and the central province of Savannakhet on November 28.
European Union Ambassador to Laos, Mark Gallagher, encouraged participants to ask questions, visit information booths, and explore fully funded scholarships for bachelor, master’s, and PhD programmes, noting that more than 200 opportunities across Europe are available to Lao learners.
Representatives from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Luxembourg showcased a wide range of study options, including Erasmus+, Campus France, DAAD, Stipendium Hungaricum programme, and options at universities in Italy and Luxembourg.
Alumni who previously studied in Europe shared practical tips and answered questions, making the fair a valuable launchpad for anyone considering studying for a degree abroad.
A standout feature of this year’s event is the introduction of Private Rooms, which offer attendees the chance to receive personalised guidance through one-on-one consultations with scholarship experts and alumni.
Ambassador Gallagher said “Many EU Member States offer bilateral scholarships specifically tailored to Lao students - in some cases with simpler procedures or better chances of selection.”
“Europe is rich in opportunity, and Team Europe is here to help you find your place within it.”
Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Dr Samlane Phankhavong said the event was organised to enable Lao students, teachers and researchers to participate in a wide range of higher-education initiatives provided by European institutions.
“These opportunities, whether through academic exchanges, scholarships, joint research, or capacity-building programmes, play a crucial role in improving the quality of our education system and supporting human resource development in Laos,” he said.
In recent years, he noted, collaboration between Laos and the European Union—particularly through initiatives such as Erasmus+—has created meaningful pathways for young Lao people and educators to gain international exposure, develop new competencies, and engage with global academic communities.
These experiences not only broaden individual horizons but also contribute significantly to national development goals, especially in the areas of innovation, skills development, and regional integration.
“These opportunities are closely aligned with our priority to strengthen human resource development and enhance the quality of higher education in Laos,” the deputy minister said.
